When it comes to your workout, deadlifts give you the biggest bang for your buck. This move is a full body exercise, so don’t let this seemingly simple hinge motion fool you. Deadlifts target several muscle groups including the back, core, glutes and legs. But deadlifts can be tricky. If done incorrectly, you may feel tension in the low back when performing this move or the following day. Lower back pain is not the goal!
Coach Josh from Graham Wellness explains how to protect the low back during this move. The trick is to keep your core tight, specifically the obliques. If you feel any sensation in the lower back during the exercise, or experience lower back pain the next day, you’re not working your core. Squeezing the abs will protect the low back and allow you to reap the full benefit of deadlifts.
